President's
Column
As Torch members, we are used to
getting together. We meet for a meal,
friendly conversation, and
intellectual stimulation through the
presentation of a paper or
topic. The term "social
distance" is the opposite of what we
do in Torch; we bring people together.
Yet, for the first time since 1918, we
are faced as a nation with a
rapidly-spreading virus which makes us
seriously ill. Not only have
clubs canceled meetings for the rest
of the year, but we are also asked to
isolate ourselves from each
other. State and national
guidelines ask that groups be limited
to only 10 people. So, for the
first time since World War II, IATC
has decided to cancel the
convention.
For many years, IATC had been asked to
consider holding conventions in places
where people travel to for vacations
or amusement. The convention
planned for Boone, North Carolina,
would have been located in an area
where tourists congregate to view the
mountains, trails and views. In
addition, the town of Boone was going
to celebrate a local musician, Doc
Watson, a world-renowned guitar player
and singer. But all is not lost:
we simply postponed the convention
until next year, June 17-20. We
will offer the same program that was
planned for this year. In 2022,
we will meet in Saratoga, NY, another
vacation destination.

Although we will not be
holding a convention, we will be
holding an IATC election this
year. Yes, this used to happen
in a club meeting and at the
convention. However, given the
national situation, we will succeed
with a modified process.
Three individuals have been vetted by
the nomination committee and found to
have met all qualifications for
election to become our next Vice
President/President-Elect. The
three applicants are Sue Breen-Held,
Rich Davis. and Roger Kramer. Sue
Breen-Held is currently president of
the Foundation, Rich Davis the
treasurer of IATC, and Roger Kramer
the regional director of Regions 7 and
9.
Since we are not having a convention,
we will mail information to each club
and the club will have to vote by
email or postal mail. The three
applicants have all agreed to this
process. Details will be posted
on the web so all members can
communicate with others in their
clubs. For information,
see the website
<www.torchelections.org>.
Each candidate has her/his information
posted on that site to inform you of
their views.
This is my last column as
President. Next year Dorothy
Driskell will assume the role. I
wish her the best, as we all do.
Torch Forever.
